Hawaiian honeycreeper



Hawaiian honeycreeper, any of a family (Drepanididae) of small songbirds exclusive to Hawaii. There are 22 species. Honeycreepers have 3 types of bills, each suited to a different method of feeding. Honeycreepers with long, curved bills suck nectar from flowers, those with heavy bills crush seeds and insects, and those with strong, straight bills chisel tree bark. Many of the species are now extinct or endangered.
