Hatch Act



Hatch Act, U.S. law sponsored by Sen. Carl Hatch in 1939, amended in 1940. It prohibits most federal employees from actively participating in political campaigns and outlaws offering employment or other compensation in exchange for political support in election campaigns. Parts of the Hatch Act barring state employees from political activities were repealed in 1974.
