Warren Hastings

Hastings, Warren (1732–1818), first governor-general of British India (1774–84). Starting as a clerk in 1750, he rose high in the British East India Company. Criticized in England as an aggressive and sometimes arbitrary governor, he was impeached (1787) on charges of extortion despite his earlier resignation. He was acquitted after a very long trial (1788–95).
