William Henry Hastie



Hastie, William Henry (1904–76), first black judge appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals and first black governor of the Virgin Islands (1946–49). Hastie served on the bench from 1950 until he retired in 1971. Earlier, he was on the board of directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
