John Harvard



Harvard, John (1607–38), U.S. cleric, first benefactor of Harvard College. Born in London, he emigrated to Massachusetts in 1637 to become Charlestown's minister. In 1638 he bequeathed half his estate and his library to the college, which was named for him in 1639.
