Hannibal



Hannibal (pop. 18,046), town in Marion county, northeastern Missouri, on the Mississippi River. It was the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and the setting for his Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Founded in 1819, Hannibal is located in a rich farming area, and is a trade center for agricultural products. Its light industry includes machinery and tools, building materials, and shoes.
