Knut Hamsun



Hamsun, Knut (1859–1952), Norwegian novelist. In his youth he led a wandering life, which became the theme of many of his novels, such as Hunger (1890) and his masterpiece, The Growth of the Soil (1917). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1920. His popularity declined as a result of his Nazi sympathies during World War II.
