Lionel Hampton



Hampton, Lionel (1913– ), U.S. jazz vibraphonist and bandleader. Originally a drummer with Louis Armstrong in 1928, he first recorded on vibraphone in 1930. He was a member of Benny Goodman's quartet 1936–40 and later became leader of his own band. He was known for his showmanship as well as his virtuoso technique.
