Hamilcar Barca



Hamilcar Barca (d. c.228 B.C.), Carthaginian general, father of Hannibal. He became commander of Sicily in 247 B.C., during the First Punic war. In 241 he returned to Carthage, quelled a mercenary revolt, and became a dictator. In 237 he led a successful occupation of Spain, but was later killed there.
