Henry Wager Halleck



Halleck, Henry Wager (1815–72), U.S. Civil War general and military theorist, whose Elements of Military Art and Science (1846) was a training manual in the war. At the war's onset he was appointed major-general in command of the Western theater and in 1862 general-in-chief. In 1864 he was relieved. He served as chief-of-staff until 1865.
