Haiphong



Haiphong (pop. 1,447,500), city in northeast Vietnam, on the Red River delta near the Gulf of Tonkin. A major southeast Asian port, in the 19th century, Haiphong was the site of the main French naval base in Indochina. During the Vietnam War the city was heavily bombed by the United States (1965–68, 1972). It has since been rebuilt as an industrial and shipping center.
