Hail

Hail, ice pellets that sometimes fall during thunderstorms. Hailstones usually consist of kernels of ice surrounded by distinct layers formed as moisture freezes around the kernel. As they are carried higher by winds, they collect further layers of ice. When they become too heavy to be supported, they fall. They are usually less than .5 in (1.3 cm) in diameter, but can reach diameters over an inch (2.5 cm) and can severely damage crops and buildings.
