Johannes Gutenberg

Gutenberg, Johannes (c.1400–68), German printer, usually considered the inventor of printing from separately cast metal types, used for movable type. By 1450 he had a press in Mainz, financed by Johann Fust (1400–c.1466). In 1455 he handed the press (and his invention) over to Fust in repayment of debts; by which time the Gutenberg (or Mazarin) Bible was at least well under way.
