Guelphs and Ghibellines



Guelphs and Ghibellines, opposing political and warring factions in 13th to 15th-century Italy. The Guelphs supported the pope, the Ghibellines the Holy Roman emperor. Both originated in 12th-century Germany, in opposition over territories of the Holy Roman Empire.
