Guatemala City



Guatemala City (pop. 1,132,000), capital and largest city of Guatemala, in Central America. The city's population nearly doubled in the 1980s. The hub of the country's social, cultural, and political life, Guatemala City is also the chief manufacturing center, producing textiles, beverages, and processed foods. It was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1917, and another earthquake killed thousands in 1976.
