Guam



Guam, largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands, in the Pacific Ocean 6,000 mi (9,656 km) west of San Francisco. A U.S. territory since 1898 and an important U.S. naval and air base, Guam was captured by the Japanese in 1941, and was recaptured by the United States in 1944.
