Sir Richard Grenville



Grenville, Sir Richard (1542–91), English naval hero. He commanded Raleigh's first expedition (1585) to colonize Roanoke Island, N.C. In a British attempt (1591) to intercept Spanish treasure ships off the Azores in his ship, Revenge, Grenville held an entire Spanish fleet in combat for 15 hours before he was mortally wounded and captured.
