Greenpeace, international organization of environmental activists, particularly protesting against nuclear and atomic testing and waste. The organization, founded by Canadians in 1969, uses nonviolent means to protest and block activities it considers environmentally harmful. On its way to the French testing grounds in Oceania in 1985, the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior was attacked and sunk and one person killed. The French government admitted responsibility.
