Asa Gray



Gray, Asa (1810–88), U.S. botanist. Being a prominent Protestant layman, his advocacy of the Darwinian thesis carried special force. However, he never accepted the materialist interpretation of the evolutionary mechanism, and taught that natural selection was indeed consistent with a divine teleology.
