Gottfried von Strassburg, medieval German poet (late 12th-early 13th century), famous for his unfinished Middle High German masterpiece Tristan (c.1210), an epic based on Celtic legend. It became the basis of Richard Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde (1859).
