Gorilla



Gorilla, largest of the primates (Gorilla gorilla), native to equatorial western Africa. A quadruped that rises to 2 legs only when displaying, the male ranges from 5 to 6 ft (150 to 190 cm) in height and weighs c.450 lb (200 kg); his brow ridge is prominent and his canine teeth enormous. Females are about half the size of males. Gorillas are generally shaggy, brown or black in color. They are highly intelligent, mostly vegetarian, and usually shy and gentle, despite their great strength. The mountain gorilla of central Africa is an endangered subspecies.
