Carlo Goldoni



Goldoni, Carlo (1707–93), Italian dramatist. His classical character comedy led to the decline in popularity of the rival commedia dell'arte. Goldoni directed the Comédie Italienne in Paris, 1762–64. Among his 150 comic plays are The Mistress of the Inn (1753), The Accomplished Maid (1756), and The Fan (1763).
