George Washington Goethals



Goethals, George Washington (1858–1928), U.S. army engineer who completed construction of the Panama Canal, 1907–14. Goethals overcame difficulties caused by the climate, disease, and the labor force. He served as governor of the Canal Zone, 1914–16.
