Glorious Revolution

Glorious Revolution, events of 1688–89 that led to the deposition of King James II of England. When the birth of James's son threatened to turn England into a Catholic monarchy, the Whigs and Tories united and invited the Dutch prince William III and his wife Mary (James's daughter) to rule. In 1689, Parliament restricted royal powers in the Bill of Rights.
