Sir Humphrey Gilbert

Gilbert, Sir Humphrey (1539?–83), English soldier and explorer. Granted a royal charter to colonize unclaimed lands in North America (1578), he founded England's first North American colony, at St. John's, Newfoundland (1583). He went down with his ship at sea near the Azores.
