Gila monster



Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum), stout-bodied lizard, up to 2 ft (61 cm) long. It and the related beaded lizard (H. horridum) are the only poisonous lizards. Both live in the deserts of the southwestern states and in Mexico. The gila monster is so rare that it is protected by law.
