Gideon

Gideon, in the Bible (Judges), leader and judge of Israel who, by his exploits in repelling the desert raiders, the Midianites, became a national hero. Having put the invaders to flight with a small force of 300 of his clan, Gideon was offered the crown. Though he declined it, his son Abimelech briefly asserted the authority his father had earned and became king.
