Edward Gibbon

Gibbon, Edward (1737–94), English historian, author of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (6 vols., 1776–88), the greatest historical work of the 18th century and a literary masterpiece. Gibbon served somewhat unsuccessfully as a member of Parliament (1774–83).
