Saint Gelasius



Gelasius, Saint (?–496), Roman Catholic pope elected 492, noted for his 494 letter to Byzantine emperor Anastasius I setting forth the relationship between spiritual authority and secular power. He contended that the power of the popes stood above that of secular leaders.
