Athol Fugard



Fugard, Athol (1932– ), South African playwright of Dutch descent known for his political dramas. A passionate opponent of apartheid, his plays reflect the ways in which blacks, coloreds, and disenfranchised whites are damaged by South Africa's racist policies. Among his best known works are The Blood Knot (1961) and Master Harold … and the Boys (1981).
