French Southern and Antarctic Territories, island possessions of France in the Indian Ocean and along a coastal portion of Antarctica. Covering an area of 3,300 sq mi (7,770 sq km), the territories include the Kerguelen and Crozet archipelagos, the islands of Saint Paul and Amsterdam, and the Adélie Coast of Antarctica. The area is inhabited by penguins, seals, and whales. Scientists live in the region to conduct research.
