Freethinker

Freethinker, person who does not accept religious dogma. The English philosopher Anthony Collins used the word in Discourse of Freethinking (1713), an argument against the authority of the church. Freethinking movements were active in 18th-century England, Germany, and France. The necessity for such movements diminished with the establishment of freedom of religion.
