Sir John Franklin



Franklin, Sir John (1786–1847), British rear admiral and Arctic explorer. In expeditions during 1819–22 and 1825–27 he charted territory from Hudson Bay North to the Arctic. He set out in 1845 with 2 ships to find the Northwest Passage; trapped in the ice, the entire expedition perished and was not traced until 1859.
