Frankenstein



Frankenstein, novel by Mary Shelley (1818). In an attempt to recreate life, its title character makes a hideous, suffering creature who seeks to torment its creator. The name has become attached to the creature, particularly as portrayed in film versions more or less loosely related to the novel.
