Stephen Collins Foster

Foster, Stephen Collins (1826–64), U.S. composer of over 200 songs and instrumental pieces. His “Oh! Susannah,” “My Old Kentucky Home,” and “Old Black Joe” and other Southern dialect songs are essentially so simple and so popular that they are often mistakenly considered folk music.
