Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale (pop. 1,255,488), city in southeastern Florida. Located 25 mi (40 km) north of Miami, it is a popular winter resort and tourist area. Although it is the site of a fort established in 1838, its development dates to 1906, when the draining of the mangrove swamps began. Crossed by a large number of waterways and canals, it is sometimes called the Venice of America. Port Everglades, the deepest harbor south of Norfolk and east of New Orleans, is located there.
