Falkland Islands



Falkland Islands, or Islas Malvinas, self-governing British colony, also claimed by Argentina, consisting of 200 islands totaling 4,700 sq mi (12,200 sq km) in the South Atlantic about 480 mi (770 km) northeast of Cape Horn. The capital is Stanley. In 1982 Argentina seized them, but British forces retook them. The inhabitants are mostly of British descent. The economy is largely dependent on sheep raising.
