Fairbanks



Fairbanks (pop. 30,843), second largest city in Alaska, located in central Alaska in the Yukon Valley. The city was settled in 1902 during the gold rush days and was incorporated in 1906. It serves as an agricultural market and mining center for the surrounding area and is the northern terminus of the Alcan highway. Concrete blocks, lumber, and mining equipment are processed there. Three mi (5 km) from the city are the University of Alaska and the Fairbanks branch of the University Agricultural Experiment Stations.
