Faeroe Islands



Faeroe Islands, group of 18 Danish islands (540 sq mi/1,399 km) in the North Atlantic, northwest of the Shetland Islands and southeast of Iceland. The largest of these volcanic islands are Strömö and Österö. The main economic activities are fishing and sheep raising. The islands have been under Danish control since the 14th century but were granted a large degree of self-government in 1948.
