Extract



Extract, concentrated essence of plant or animal material, used as food flavoring, in drugs, and in cosmetics. Food extracts may be produced by a combination of crushing and cooking to extract oil and other flavorings. Some extracts, like vanilla, are prepared in a solution of alcohol; others may use glycerol or propylene glycol. Morphine is an extract of the opium poppy. Common cosmetic extracts include musk and balsam.
