Extension program

Extension program, usually a non-degree educational program offered by a college or university, generally off campus. Extension students may take courses to advance their careers or for personal enjoyment or development. Some extension courses are now offered for college credit and can be counted toward degree requirements. Early extension programs were developed by Cambridge University in England (1873) and the University of Chicago (1892). Programs are now common in the U.S.
