Evers, name of 2 African-American civil rights leaders. In 1969 (James) Charles Evers (1922– ) became the first black mayor of Fayette, Miss., and in 1971 and 1983 he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Mississippi. Medgar Wiley Evers (1925–63), his brother, was the state's first African-American field secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was an active organizer of voter-registration drives until he was murdered by a sniper.
