Edward Everett



Everett, Edward (1794–1865), U.S. statesman and orator. A Unitarian clergyman, he became professor of Greek at Harvard in 1815, was a congressman (1825–35) and governor (1836–39) of Massachusetts, minister to England (1841–45), president of Harvard (1846–49), secretary of state (1852–53), senator (1853–54), and in 1860 the Constitutional Union Party's vice-presidential candidate.
