Estevanico



Estevanico, or Estéban (1500?–39), explorer in colonial America. A Moroccan slave who came to North America as the servant of an explorer in 1528, he later became an interpreter and guide for the advance party of Francisco Coronado, which explored the Southwest (1539), searching for the Seven Cities of Cibola, cities of gold Estevanico had been told about by Native Americans. He was killed at Cibola by members of the Zuñi tribe.
