Julius Erving



Erving, Julius (1950– ), U.S. basketball player. Erving, nicknamed “Dr. J.,” stood 6'6″ (198 cm) and played forward and guard. Known for his leaping ability and high-flying style of play, Erving ushered in the age of dunking and “playing above the rim.” After attending the University of Massachusetts (1968–71), he played for the Virginia Squires (ABA, 1971–73), the New York Nets (ABA, 1973–76), and the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA, 1976–87). He retired in 1987, having been named Most Valuable Player by the ABA (1974, 1975) and NBA (1981).
