Thomas Erastus

Erastus, Thomas (1524–83), Swiss theologian. Erastianism, his doctrine, held that the state should have complete control over the affairs of the Church. An adherent of Zwingli, he clashed with the Calvinists, particularly over the practice of excommunication, which he opposed in his Explicatio gravissimae quaestionis (1589).
