Egbert



Egbert (A.D. 775?–839), king of Wessex in England (802–39). After being driven into exile by the king of Mercia, he gained the West Saxon throne. He conquered Cornwall, Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, also dominating Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria, thus expanding Wessex and making it the dominant kingdom of England.
