Efflorescence

Efflorescence, in chemistry, loss of water from crystals. If the pressure of the water vapor produced by the crystals is greater than the pressure of water vapor in the atmosphere, the crystals will lose water and develop a crumbly appearance. The opposite of efflorescence, absorbtion of moisture from the atmosphere, is called deliquescence.
