U.S. Department of Education

Education, U.S. Department of, cabinet-level department established Sept. 27, 1979 as part of President Jimmy Carter's plan to reorganize the federal government. With an initial budget of $14.1 billion and some 17,400 employees, it was created when the Department of Health, Education and Welfare was split into the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education.
