Eastern question

Eastern question, international political problems raised in the 19th century by the decline of the Ottoman Empire. The ambitions of Russia, Austria-Hungary, Britain, and France in the East Mediterranean led to the Crimean War (1854–56) and Balkan Wars (1912–13) and were partly responsible for the outbreak of World War I.
